Make Wendover Smile with the 2026 Sunflower Competition

Wendover Parish Council is delighted to bring back the Make Wendover Smile Sunflower Competition for 2026, inviting residents and students of all ages to get involved in a fun and uplifting community activity.

This year, we’re on the lookout for the tallest and quirkiest sunflowers in Wendover. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or trying your hand at growing for the first time, this is a fantastic way to add some colour to your outdoor space and be part of something that brightens the whole community.

The competition opens on 20 July and runs until 31 August, with judging taking place during this period. Sunflowers are expected to bloom from July through to September, with their peak in August, making it the perfect time to showcase your efforts.

If you haven’t started planting yet, there’s still time. Sowing is recommended from mid-April to the end of May to give your sunflowers the best chance to grow tall and strong.

To help you get started, free packs of sunflower seeds are available from participating businesses in Wendover. Simply look out for the “Make Wendover Smile Sunflower Seeds Available Here” sign in shop windows.

Taking part is easy, fun, and a great way to get children and families involved in gardening while supporting a positive community initiative.
