Leisure Cycling from Wendover

Wendover is an ideal centre for cycle tourists to visit and stay. With the Chiltern Hills on one side and the Vale of Aylesbury on the other, cycling choice is wide and varied. The Chilterns Cycleway touches the outskirts of Wendover. This 170 mile signed circular route takes in the best of the hilly countryside whilst the Vale of Aylesbury offers less hilly terrain on quiet lanes out towards Winslow.  Sustrans signed route NCN57 is nearby, this connects Chesham in the heart of the Chilterns with the centre of Oxford.

For those happy to cycle off road there is an equally varied choice. The Wendover Arm Canal connects with the Grand Union Canal at Bulbourne from where it is possible to cycle direct to the centre of London or in the other direction towards the wider Buckinghamshire countryside. Nearby, Wendover Woods provides family friendly off road cycling and further afield there is Ashridge Estate.  For more serious off roaders there is the Aston Hill Bike Park with challenging down hill competition courses.

Wendover is also a great base for day rides. There is a 14 mile circular route from Wendover following stretches of the Chilterns Cycleway. A leaflet describing this route is available.

The following web sites provide detailed information on routes mentioned above, many of which have downloadable leaflets. The website of the Chilterns Conservation Board has a detailed map showing a wide range of signed routes. In addition the site is a valuable source of information on what to see and do whilst visiting the area. The official site of Sustrans, their map shows many routes in addition to their own. A helpful site that list routes by county as well as by mapping. gives more background and details on what is available in the area along with information on where to obtain help with mechanical problems should this be necessary.
